Two talented Indian filmmakers, Sandhya Suri for Santosh and Karan Kandhari for Sister Midnight have earned nominations at the prestigious BAFTA Film Awards 2025, which were announced on Tuesday. The nominations were revealed during an online ceremony hosted by Mia McKenna-Bruce and Will Sharpe. Among the highlights, the film All We Imagine As Light brought cheer for India, alongside the nominations for Suri and Kandhari.

Santosh & Sister Midnight are nominated for BAFTA Awards 2025

Both filmmakers received nominations in the Outstanding Debut by British Writer, Director or Producer category, thanks to their films being produced in the UK. Sandhya Suri is nominated for her film Santosh, alongside James Bowsher and Balthazar de Ganay.

Meanwhile, Karan Kandhari secured a nomination for his film Sister Midnight. They are competing against another Indian-origin filmmaker, Dev Patel, who is nominated for his directorial debut, Monkey Man. The category also includes Luna Carmoon for Hoard and Richard Peppiat for Kneecap.

About Sister Midnight & Santosh

Karan Kandhari made his debut with Sister Midnight. It is a horror-comedy that received a £1 million grant from the British Film Institute in 2022. The film features an impressive cast including Radhika Apte, Ashok Pathak, Chhaya Kadam, and Smita Tambe. It has been premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, garnering rave reviews.

On the other hand, Santosh is a crime drama marking Sandhya Suri’s directorial debut. Produced by British filmmakers Mike Goodridge, James Bowsher, Alan McAlex, and Balthazar de Ganay, the film is set in rural India. It stars Shahana Goswami as a widow who inherits her husband’s police job and is tasked with investigating a gruesome murder. The film also features Sunita Rajwar. And has represented the UK in the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

BAFTA Awards 2025

The British Academy Film Awards is commonly known as the BAFTA Awards. It is awarded by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. And it is regarded as the British equivalent of the Oscars. The BAFTA Awards 2025 ceremony will be held on February 16. The awards streaming live in India on Lionsgate Play.
